Hard Water Stains on Windows: What They Are and How to Remove Them

May 4, 2026 Justin

Hard water stains are one of the most common — and frustrating — window problems in Queensland. They look like cloudy white or grey smears that resist ordinary cleaning. If your windows look dull even after washing, hard water staining is often the culprit.

What Causes Hard Water Stains?

Hard water contains dissolved minerals — primarily calcium and magnesium. When water evaporates off glass, those minerals are left behind as white or chalky deposits. Over time they bond with the glass and become increasingly difficult to remove.

Common sources in Queensland include sprinkler systems hitting windows, pool or spa splash, bore water, rainwater runoff from concrete or mortar, and tap water left to dry on the glass.

Three Levels of Hard Water Staining

Level 1 — Light Mineral Deposits

White film or spots visible when glass is dry. Still at the surface level. Often treatable with diluted white vinegar solution and some elbow grease, or a commercial calcium/lime remover.

Level 2 — Moderate Staining

Deposits have partially etched into the glass. Standard household products won’t touch it. Requires professional-grade glass restoration compound and a polishing pad. This is where DIY usually stops working.

Level 3 — Severe Etching

The glass itself has been permanently altered at a microscopic level — appearing frosted or hazy regardless of cleaning. Only professional restoration treatment (wet-sanding with cerium oxide) can recover it. Replacement may be the only option for severely affected panes.

DIY Removal for Level 1 Staining

  1. Mix equal parts white vinegar and distilled water in a spray bottle
  2. Spray generously and allow to sit for 5 minutes
  3. Scrub in circular motions with a non-scratch scrubbing pad
  4. Rinse and squeegee off
  5. Repeat if needed — stubborn spots may take 2–3 applications

How to Prevent Hard Water Stains

  • Redirect sprinkler heads away from windows and glass fencing
  • Treat windows with a hydrophobic glass coating
  • Rinse windows with pure water after pool or spa activity nearby
  • Schedule regular professional cleaning before deposits bond
